Doel: a deserted town

The city of Antwerp is the second biggest it of Belgium. It also contains the second biggest port of Europe. In order to keep it competitive it continuously expands swallowing nearby towns like the one portrayed below: Doel.

The town of Doel was scheduled to disappear but some locals refused to leave and challenged the decision which led to the strange situation that exists today. Most people have left the town and it has become a magnet for street artists but at the same time people still live there which gives the town a strange eerie feel to it.

Doel blijft is Dutch for Doel stays and it is an expression of resistance from the people who stubbornly refuse to leave and continue to live in this ghost town.
